What Goes Wrong Inside a Stuck or Worn Ignition Cylinder
The ignition cylinder is a lock — a mortise lock variant engineered specifically for automotive use. Like any mortise lock, it relies on a series of spring-loaded pins or wafers that must align precisely with the correct key profile before the cylinder can rotate. Over time, those wafers wear flat, the springs fatigue, and small debris from a key ring accumulates inside the bore. The result is a cylinder that feels gritty, requires heavy jiggling, or refuses to accept the key at all. Cold Massachusetts winters accelerate the process: temperature swings cause metal components to expand and contract repeatedly, and the road salt that coats every surface from December through March works its way into unprotected cylinder housings and corrodes the internal wafers.
A worn cylinder often gives you weeks of subtle warnings — a key that suddenly feels stiff, a slight grinding sensation on the first turn of the morning, or a key that must be wiggled at an odd angle to start the engine. Ignoring those signals almost always leads to a complete seizure at the most inconvenient moment. When that happens, forcing the key can shear off a wafer inside the cylinder, turning what would have been a straightforward repair into a full cylinder replacement.
